A developer working across multiple EVM chains—Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, and others—keeps most assets in Rabby Wallet, the self-custody application that emphasizes transaction clarity and approval visibility. Then the laptop fails. The device is gone, unreachable, or overwritten. The immediate question is whether the funds can be recovered. The answer hinges entirely on whether a seed phrase was recorded correctly when Rabby Wallet was first set up, and whether that recovery information is stored where it can actually be found.
Self-custody means the user, not a company, holds the cryptographic keys to the funds. That principle applies whether assets sit in Rabby Wallet on a laptop, a mobile device, or a hardware wallet connected to a desktop browser extension. But self-custody also means the user must manage recovery. There is no “forgot password” link and no customer service that can retrieve a lost wallet. Instead, the only reliable path forward is a seed phrase that was saved when the wallet was created. This article explains how to back up a Rabby Wallet properly, what to do if the backup is lost, and how to restore funds if a device becomes unavailable.
Understanding the seed phrase in a self-custody wallet
When a user downloads Rabby Wallet from rabby.io and creates a new wallet, the application generates a seed phrase: typically twelve or twenty-four words in a specific order. This phrase is not a password. It is the master key from which all of the wallet’s addresses, private keys, and recovery paths are derived using an industry standard called BIP-39. If someone has the seed phrase, they can recreate the entire wallet on any device, recover all the addresses, and access all the funds held in that wallet.
The seed phrase is the most critical piece of information a self-custody wallet user will ever create. Unlike a password that you type to unlock an account on a website, the seed phrase does not recover anything hosted on a server. Instead, it is a cryptographic blueprint that produces the same wallet on any compatible application. A user could restore a Rabby Wallet using a competitor application that also supports Ethereum and EVM chains, or move to a different device entirely, because the phrase itself is not dependent on Rabby or any single company.
That universality also means the seed phrase must be treated as equivalent to total control over the funds. Writing it on paper, storing it in a safe, or keeping it in a vault is not excessive caution. It is the minimum requirement. If a person with bad intent obtains the phrase, they can transfer every token from every address derived from that phrase. Once transferred, the transaction is irreversible and cannot be recovered. The wallet is not stolen in the sense of law enforcement recovery; it is only stolen if the legitimate owner can produce the seed phrase first.
When a user completes the initial setup after a rabby wallet download, Rabby asks the user to confirm the phrase by selecting the words in order. This confirmation step is not optional and should not be rushed. The application is testing whether the user actually recorded the phrase correctly. If the confirmation fails, it means the recording step was misread or mistyped. The correct response is to start over and write the phrase again carefully rather than assuming the application is wrong.
Best practices for recording and storing the seed phrase
The moment a user creates a wallet in Rabby Wallet—whether on a desktop browser extension or mobile application—the seed phrase appears on the screen. The best practice is to write the phrase on paper immediately, by hand, while looking at the screen. This creates a first tangible backup. Write the words clearly. If the handwriting is unclear later, a misread word could cause hours of failed recovery attempts. Number the words from one to twelve or one to twenty-four, because the order is critical.
After writing the phrase on paper, store that paper in a secure location. A locked desk drawer in a home office is better than leaving it on a desk visible to visitors. A safe-deposit box at a bank is stronger still. Some users keep one copy in a safe at home and another in a safe-deposit box, so a single fire or theft does not eliminate the only backup. This redundancy is especially important for users with substantial holdings. The cost of a safe-deposit box or fireproof safe is trivial compared to the value of cryptocurrency that could be recovered with the phrase.
Never photograph the seed phrase on a smartphone or computer and never type it into any email, chat application, or online storage service. Cloud services such as Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox create copies of files on remote servers controlled by other companies. If those companies’ systems are breached, or if a government agency compels them to disclose the contents, the phrase could be exposed. Similarly, do not store the phrase in a password manager, notes application, or messaging platform. Treat the phrase as physical paper or memorized information, not as digital data.
Memorizing the seed phrase is possible but not recommended for most users. The phrase is complex, the words follow an unusual order, and a single misremembered word will make recovery fail. Writing it on paper remains the safest and most practical method. Some users prefer to split the phrase into parts and store them in different locations—for instance, words one through six in one safe and words seven through twelve in another. This approach does reduce the risk from a single physical theft but also increases the total number of recovery points that must be maintained and the likelihood that one part will be lost.
Recovering Rabby Wallet after device loss
If a device containing Rabby Wallet becomes unavailable, the recovery process is straightforward if the seed phrase has been preserved. On a new device, the user installs Rabby Wallet again by downloading it from rabby.io or the browser extension store for their browser. When the installation completes and the application opens for the first time, users are presented with two choices: create a new wallet or import an existing wallet. To recover a lost wallet, select the import option.
The application will prompt for the seed phrase. The user enters the twelve or twenty-four words in the correct order, with correct spelling. After entering the phrase, Rabby derives all the wallet addresses and the blockchain state is restored. On desktop, users can verify that the recovered wallet displays the expected token balances and transaction history. On mobile, the process is identical. Within seconds to a few minutes, depending on the networks and assets involved, the recovered wallet is fully functional and the user can resume transferring funds or interacting with smart contracts.
The recovery process does not require the old device to be available. The seed phrase is sufficient. This is why safeguarding the phrase is so crucial. A user with only the phrase but no device can borrow a computer, install Rabby Wallet, import the wallet, and verify the funds are still there. A user without the phrase but with the device can do nothing if the device fails or is lost. This fundamental asymmetry means the seed phrase should be treated as more valuable than any single piece of hardware.
In some cases, a user might fear that the seed phrase itself has been compromised—for example, if someone visited and may have seen the paper backup, or if the backup was stored in a location that was burglarized. In that situation, the best practice is to transfer all funds from the compromised wallet to a new wallet as quickly as possible. Create a new wallet in Rabby, record its seed phrase separately, and move tokens from the old wallet to new addresses. Only after the transfer is complete and confirmed can the old wallet be abandoned. The attacker may have the phrase, but only if they also have the funds faster than the legitimate owner moves them.
Partial recovery and multichain considerations
Rabby Wallet supports multiple EVM-compatible blockchains: Ethereum mainnet, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BNB Chain, and Avalanche. A single seed phrase produces addresses on all of these networks. When a wallet is recovered, all of those addresses are also recovered. The user does not need to know which network held which assets; Rabby automatically scans the networks and displays all balances in a unified portfolio view.
This multichain support means recovery is comprehensive. If a user held ETH on Ethereum, USDC on Polygon, and USDT on Arbitrum, importing the seed phrase restores access to all three assets. The recovered wallet displays the total portfolio value across networks. However, this also means the user should not assume that tokens appear instantly. Rabby uses blockchain explorers and indexing services to fetch balances. If the network is congested or the indexing service is temporarily slow, balances may take a few seconds or a minute to appear. The funds are still there; the display is catching up.
Users should also verify that the gas fees for moving tokens across networks match their expectations. A token on a low-cost network such as Polygon or Arbitrum can be moved to Ethereum mainnet, but the gas cost to move it on Ethereum is significantly higher than moving it on Polygon. Rabby displays gas estimates before the user confirms a transaction, so the cost is known. But a user recovering a wallet with tokens spread across several networks should plan which transfers to make first and budget for the total cost, rather than assuming all moves will be equally inexpensive.
Hardware wallet recovery and extended backup strategies
Some users connect a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor to Rabby Wallet via USB on desktop. In this configuration, the private keys are not stored on the computer at all; they remain on the hardware device. If the computer fails, the hardware wallet is still available. The seed phrase for the hardware wallet is what must be backed up and protected, not the Rabby application. The recovery process is to connect the hardware wallet to any computer, install Rabby Wallet from rabby.io, connect the hardware device, and resume operations immediately.
This setup offers an additional layer of security because the private keys never exist on the internet-connected device. An attacker would need physical access to the hardware wallet itself to steal the keys, which is a much higher bar than stealing a seed phrase that might be stored in a desk drawer. However, the hardware wallet is still a physical object that can be lost, damaged, or stolen. The backup strategy remains the same: write the seed phrase on paper and store it securely. Without that phrase, even the hardware wallet cannot be recovered if it is damaged or lost.
Some sophisticated users employ a multi-signature setup, where two or more independent seed phrases are required to approve any transaction. This is beyond the scope of basic Rabby Wallet usage but is worth mentioning for users with very large holdings or security-sensitive applications. Multi-signature recovery requires all of the individual seed phrases, so backup and storage become even more critical. The complexity is higher, but the security threshold is also significantly elevated.
What to do if the seed phrase is lost or forgotten
If a user loses the seed phrase itself—the paper is thrown away, the safe-deposit box is inaccessible, or the user never wrote it down in the first place—there is no recovery method. The Rabby Wallet application cannot regenerate the seed phrase. Rabby has no backend database, no company support team, and no way to override the cryptographic requirement for the seed phrase. This is not a limitation of Rabby; it is a feature of self-custody. The guarantee that only the user controls the funds is enforced by the impossibility for anyone else to access them.
In this scenario, the only option is to abandon the old wallet and create a new one. The user installs Rabby Wallet on a new device, creates a new wallet, records the new seed phrase, and then transfers any remaining accessible funds from the old wallet to the new one. If the old wallet cannot be accessed at all because its device is lost and the seed phrase is gone, then those funds are permanently inaccessible. They are not lost in the sense that someone took them; they are unreachable because the user no longer has the one key that unlocks them.
This outcome is why the phrase must be treated with the highest priority immediately after wallet creation. The backup is not something to do later, when it seems convenient. It is the first step, before adding any funds to the wallet. Many users who have recovered from lost wallets report that they recorded the phrase, looked at it multiple times to verify it was correct, and then stored it in a single safe location. These few minutes of careful attention during setup prevent the irreversible loss of the wallet.
Testing recovery before it is necessary
A recovery method that has never been tested is not actually a recovery method; it is a hope. The best practice, especially for users with significant holdings, is to test the recovery process before any emergency forces it. The test is simple: write down the seed phrase after creating the wallet, then on a separate device or a fresh installation of Rabby, import that phrase and verify that the wallet appears with the correct addresses and balances. This test proves that the phrase was written correctly and stored in a place where it can actually be found.
Testing recovery also reveals practical issues before they matter. If the handwriting on the phrase backup is illegible, the test reveals it immediately. If one word was miswritten, the import will fail at that word and the error can be corrected. If the backup is stored in a location that is harder to access than expected, the test shows this while the original device is still available. For users who place multiple backups in different locations, testing confirms that each location actually has a readable copy of the phrase.
The test should be done once, shortly after wallet creation. A second test years later is not necessary unless the backup has been moved or rewritten. The goal is to verify that the backup process works, not to practice recovery repeatedly. After confirmation, the backup can be stored and left alone until needed.
Prevention: Avoiding wallet loss in the first place
The most practical recovery strategy is to prevent the need for recovery. A device that is physically secured, password-protected, and kept safe is less likely to be stolen or damaged. Regular software updates, antivirus scanning, and secure browsing habits reduce the risk that malware can access the browser extension or compromise the device. These preventive measures do not eliminate risk, but they substantially reduce it.
For users who access Rabby Wallet frequently, keeping the wallet installed on a dedicated device or a device used primarily for cryptocurrency can reduce exposure. A laptop used only for Web3 interactions and nothing else is less likely to be compromised than a device that handles email, web browsing, and other activities. This is a luxury many users cannot afford, but it is worth considering for substantial holdings.
Another preventive practice is to move tokens that are not being actively used to a hardware wallet or a separate cold storage address. This reduces the number of funds stored in an actively-used wallet. If the actively-used wallet is somehow compromised, the attacker only has access to the tokens that are actually stored in that wallet at that moment, not the entire portfolio. This segregation of funds is not required for security but can limit the damage if something goes wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do immediately after creating a Rabby Wallet?
Immediately after creation, record the seed phrase by writing it on paper while looking at the screen. Number the words and store the paper in a secure location such as a locked safe or safe-deposit box. Do not photograph the phrase, email it, or type it into any digital service. If the wallet will hold substantial funds, test the recovery process on a separate device to confirm the phrase is correct before the test device is destroyed or the backup locations are finalized.
Can I recover Rabby Wallet if I lost my device but still have the seed phrase?
Yes, completely. Install Rabby Wallet from rabby.io on any new device, select the import option when the wallet opens, enter the seed phrase, and the wallet will be fully restored. All addresses, balances, and transaction history will appear. The process works across browsers, devices, and operating systems because the seed phrase is the only information required.
What happens if I lose both my device and my seed phrase backup?
If both are lost, the wallet cannot be recovered. The funds are permanently inaccessible because the seed phrase is the only key that can unlock them. There is no customer service, password reset, or backdoor recovery option in a self-custody wallet. This is why the seed phrase backup must be treated as the most important piece of data you own and why testing the recovery process before an emergency is strongly recommended.
